DBC Foodservice wins Newcastle City Council contract

DBC Foodservice has signed a two-year contract to supply food to over 100 sites owned by Newcastle City Council, incorporating school catering, social care and civic locations. Worth in excess of £1.8m per annum, the contract has an option to extend by a further two years in 2011.

The agreement marks an important change in the way the Council buys its food, with DBC supplying a full multi-temperature range of products including chilled, ambient, grocery, meats and frozen items. This means the Council will reduce its impact on the environment by consolidating its food supply.

Chris Horne, managing director of DBC, says: "DBC is delighted to be working with Newcastle City Council to reduce its carbon footprint and improve the quality of food at its sites. The Council is one of the first to award a whole contract to one supplier to attain its desired environmental benefits. By combining orders and deliveries, the Council will significantly reduce its food miles."

A spokesperson from Newcastle City Council says: "We are working together with our partners to review sustainability and local sourcing, and DBC was able to offer us a one-stop-shop solution. DBC will use a local meat supplier and a local free-range egg supplier as well as consolidating other products into a single delivery. We are buying Fair Trade products as part of the contract and are working with DBC to introduce further organic, fairly traded and locally produced products to our sites."

As well as the environmental benefits of using DBC, Newcastle City Council is also able to adhere to its nutritional requirements. The Newcastle City Council spokesperson continues:

"We are committed to ensuring all of our school meals meet the latest Government guidelines regarding nutrition. DBC is able to advise and supply our educational sites with these products to ensure we are fully compliant in providing our pupils with a nutritionally-balanced choice of meals."

DBC previously supplied Newcastle City Council with grocery and chilled products, with the new award significantly increasing the contract size.

DBC is a privately owned delivered food wholesale business which sells to all sectors of the catering industry such as independent restaurants, hotels, private schools, local authorities, healthcare, the MoD worldwide food supply and high street restaurant chains. The company serves caterers with over 8,000 multi-temperature products, turning over in excess of £270m.

With 14 regional branches throughout the UK, DBC is able to adopt the approach of a local supplier, offering bespoke solutions for customers and short communication lines, while using its national infrastructure to source an extensive range of quality products.
